Original – Acrylics, sand, rust and resin on canvas and board, framed in black wood frame, 46cm x 56cm x 4cm
This Corrosion 4 draws its essence from the rusted remnants of a working harbour, where aged and corroded metal speak of time, toil, and transformation. It is based on weathered stumps in St Ives harbour that may have been from posts or moorings subject to marine corrosion – an homage to maritime decay and the beauty found in erosion.
Beneath its surface, however, the work channels a visceral emotional landscape. It reflects the raw, unfiltered experience of aging – of things falling apart, of strength giving way to fragility. The use of found materials such as sand and rust not only reinforces its muscular, industrial aesthetic but also embeds the artwork with lived histories. These elements carry their own stories, lending texture and memory to the surface, and inviting viewers to confront the tension between permanence and impermanence.
The title is taken from the song of the same name by The Sisters of Mercy.
The work can be hung using the hangings attached (see image).
