Three Artists, One Place
An exhibition shaped by landscape, memory and material.
Three Artists, One Place brings together the work of St Ives–based ceramicist Julie Harper and artists Hani Mroz and Shelley Thornton in a celebration of how one landscape can inspire three distinct creative languages. Though their practices differ in medium and approach, all three artists draw instinctively from the elemental character of West Cornwall — its shifting light, its ancient landforms, its weathered textures and its deep sense of time. The exhibition reveals the shared pulse of place that runs through their work, while honouring the individuality of each artist’s response.
Shelley Thornton
Shelley Thornton’s bold, colour‑driven abstract paintings channel the emotional and sensory experience of living in St Ives. Her works capture the fleeting moments where landscape, memory and feeling converge — the shimmer of light on water, the tension between urban rhythm and coastal stillness, the stories embedded in everyday life. Texture and symbolism emerge within her blocks of colour, creating layered surfaces that hold both immediacy and depth. Salvaged materials such as sand, salt and rust are woven into her compositions, bringing fragments of the environment directly into the work. Each painting becomes a vivid record of place, time and the traces we leave behind.
Julie Harper
Working from her studio in St Ives, ceramicist Julie Harper translates the serenity and beauty of the Cornish coastline into delicate hand‑painted porcelain. Her bowls, vases, platters and framed porcelain paintings often feature scenes that reflect her deep affection for the region she calls home. Porcelain, with its fine and luminous quality, allows Julie to capture the subtle tones and atmospheres of Cornwall’s shores. Her work offers a gentle, heartfelt portrait of coastal life, inviting viewers to pause and reconnect with the quiet poetry of the sea.
Hani Mroz
Living just outside St Ives, Hani Mroz is deeply rooted in the wildness of West Penwith. Her paintings are shaped by the moors, coast paths and ancient landscapes she walks, where the presence of past lives and old stories feels almost tangible. Winter — with its stark light, drama and shifting weather — is her favourite season, and its mood often permeates her work. Hani frequently incorporates recycled materials such as cardboard and wood into her paintings and frames, allowing the rawness of these surfaces to echo the rugged terrain she depicts. Working predominantly in oils, she seeks to capture the mystery, atmosphere and emotional resonance of the land she knows so intimately.
