Before, Behind is a largish artwork that creates a bold statement.
It forms part of my Cornish Landmarks Collection – recreating iconic buildings of Cornwall.
This is a representation of of Wheal Coates Tin Mine at St Agnes, Cornwall depicting a play on angles reflecting the rocks and lodes below. The quote “before, behind, at every angle..” is taken from the poem “The Mine” published circa 1863 and written by John Harris, a miner at Dolcoath Mine, Camborne, Cornwall. It is a graphic, visceral description of mining at that time. I am fascinated by mining as coal mining is part of my DNA and I love the sight of all the (sadly) disused mines around Cornwall. Wheal Coates is situated in a particularly beautiful spot.
