I Met My Love (Tate St Ives) is a largish artwork that creates a bold statement.
It forms part of my Cornish Landmarks Collection – recreating iconic buildings of Cornwall.
This is a representation of the Tate Gallery, St Ives. The quote “I met my love by the gas works wall” is taken from the song “Dirty Old Town”, written by Ewan MacColl and sung by many. The Pogues’ version is the one that most stirs me. The quoted line sums up my feelings about the building. An iconic modern art gallery, recently awarded the Museum of the Year for its “deeply intelligent and breathtakingly beautiful” gallery extension, it is sited on that most industrial of places – a former gasworks. When I first visited St Ives, just after the Tate was built, I met my love. My enduring and eternal love. My love of St Ives, Porthmeor Beach, the gallery itself, its nod to its industrial past, and the art it encases. From that moment, I knew I would come to live in St Ives.
