The Silence is a large artwork that creates a bold statement.
It is part of Shelley’s Shorelines Collection created in response to the stunning seascapes of Cornwall.
Loosely based on a body of sea water – known as a ‘sound’ – it refers to the striking absence of sound arising from the rhythms of the sea – the sound of silence.
Composed of paler aqua colours reflecting the silence of the ocean, it also references the ‘sound’ in the narrower strip of deep aqua colours on the left – which abstracts from a sound wave exploring the the mesmerizing acoustics of crashing waves.
Juxtaposing the sound and the silence in this way simulates the adaptation process where the brain changes its focus from one to the other – from sound to silence, and back again.
The use of salvaged materials (sand, rust) from around an ocean sound bring their histories to bear on the reading of the artwork.
The work can be hung using the hangings attached, or can be hung direct to the wall on screws or nails.
