The Sound & the Silence 2 is part of Shelley’s Shorelines Collection created in response to the stunning seascapes of Cornwall.
It is loosely based on a body of sea water – known as a ‘sound’ – with deep to pale aqua colours reflecting the ocean. It also abstracts from a sound wave. Connecting the two in this way references the soundscapes of the sea – the mesmerizing acoustics of crashing waves. The ‘silence’ part is also loosely based on a body of sea water, but also refers to the striking absence of sound, or the sound of silence.
Juxtaposing the sound and the silence in this way simulates the adaptation process where the brain changes its focus from one to the other – from sound to silence, and back again.
The use of salvaged materials (sand, rope) from around an ocean sound bring their histories to bear on the reading of the artwork.
